| amazing gingersnaps! |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|01:13 pm] |
ooh.. bakex3, lol, I feel all emotional finally having something to post here again.
so, these cookies began with a trip to our local organic farm, where I was offered pork back fat. I'm a sucker for doing things the hard way, so I took my chunk home and after a day of stirring and straining had four jars of pure, snow white, non transfatty lard!
Imagine my excitement, now I could break out all those forbidden recipes (sticking to a organic diet can be hard on a baker) I'd filed under "cant get the stuff"
my first port of call was cookies, I'd heard great things about lardsnaps (though maybe calling them that to the fearfull would be a bad idea! lol) so as I had all the other stuff.... ( More! ) |

| Very Fruity Cookies |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|06:16 pm] |

Inspired by Crabtree & Evelyn's Oatflake & Cranberry Cookies.
Received the cookies as a gift - they were absolutely delicious, and really expensive! (USD12 for 200grams)
So I thought, I should try making something similar myself.
And this is the finished product :

| The Albanian Virgin - Alice Munro |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|04:55 pm] |
"My connection was in danger - that was all. Sometimes our connection is frayed, it is in danger, it seems almost lost. Views and streets deny knowledge of us, the air grows thin. Wouldn't we rather have a destiny to submit to, then, something that claims us, anything, instead of such flimsy choices, arbitrary days?"
-from the short story "The Albanian Virgin" in Alice Munro's Open Secrets |

| Le Platane (Fine Dining Restaurant in Shanghai) |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|03:55 pm] |

I have heard a lot about Justin Quek's restaurant in Shanghai, and I just had to try it when I was in Shanghai. Everyone has raved about how this Singaporean has raised the bar of gourmet dining in Shanghai. Dad purchase his cookbook for me when he was there last year, and I have tried his lobster laksa...and can i just say....it is the best laksa i have ever tasted. I modified it though...i used Sri Lankan Mud Crabs instead of Lobsters due to cost. Click here to read about it
For main, I had a spiced roast duck breast. The presentation of my dish was just out of this world...very articistic...and the portion was still very decent, so that was good. Big plate with a decent amount of food...excellent...no big plate small portion sort of thing. The duck was still pink...juicy and the marriage different spices used blended really well together. The potatoes were great too! Personally I do pay a fair bit of attention to how the potatoes are done. It can't be too floury and dry. It has to have flavour, a firmish texture with a nice finish. Justin did great!

I've been scanning a lot of film this past month, and I'm trying to get back into the habit of posting the scans online. Here's a small sampling.
( Eight More )
More will be coming daily at my journal, as I finish it up. I don't want to clog the communities with daily posts, but I'll try to remember to share like this periodically. I miss being more active last year.

"When you asked for my hand a few minutes ago, I was still too young to marry." I looked up at him and saw a smile start. "I'm older now, so much older that not only can I marry, but I can beg you to marry me." I knelt and took his hand.
He didn't let me kneel before him. He pulled me up and kissed me again. I took that to signify his consent. - Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine. |

| Sampling |
[Jul. 9th, 2008|12:26 am] |
I've been hanging out here for a couple of years and never contributed anything. Today is the day that changes.
The first song that comes to mind when thinking of sampling is Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby". They used a sample from Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure". They settled out of court and songwriting credits were later given to members of Queen and David Bowie.
Also, I noticed a few weeks back that I starting singing a different song when listening to Kid Rock's "All Summer Long". I started to sing Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London". I listened to them back to back and realized that it was same tune. Unlike some artists though, Kid Rock did give partial credit to Zevon for the track.

Before I post another set of my tour across China album, here's something a little different.
These are some cute pictures of my cousin's (whom we stayed with a few days in China) pomeranian dog. Enjoy.

Clara and Ambrose and Alice and Temelcoff and Cato - this cluster made up a drama without him. And he himself was nothing but a prism that refracted their lives. He searched out things, he collected things. He was an abashed man, an inheritance from his father. Born in Abashed, Ontario. What did the word mean? Something that suggested there was a terrible horizon in him beyond which he couldn't leap. Something hollow, so when alone, when not aligned with another - whether it was Ambrose or Clara or Alice - he could hear the rattle within that suggested a space between him and community. A gap of love.

| Rumors by Anna Godbersen |
[Jul. 8th, 2008|07:17 pm] |

"The racker her heart was making in her ears was now drowning out all the rosy thoughts of Henry, and she began instead to fear that she had somehow or other been a fool again. That was the way love was, she guessed- it left you always unsteady on your feet. But something caused her to turn her head, before that feeling of vulnerability grew too strong, and that was when she saw Henry staring at her with such affection and desire that it made her lips quiver and open. He was across the room, near the entrance. There was nothing unsteady about his gaze, which she held for several seconds. By the time two large men moved to either side of him, blocking her view and drawing Henry deeper into the ballroom, she knew that she had not been a fool." |

This is part of the my favourite poem, i only put the first few lines of the begining stanza's then the last stanza
They throw in Drummer Hodge, to rest Uncoffined – just as found...
Young Hodge the Drummer never knew – Fresh from his Wessex home – The meaning of the broad Karoo, The Bush, the dusty loam...
Yet portion of that unknown plain Will Hodge forever be; His homely Northern breast and brain Grow to some Southern tree, And strange-eyed constellation reign His stars eternally. |
